Happy 33rd Anniversary of the International Youth Center Foundation!

A Decade of Action Towards Sustainable Development 2030

April 16, 1988, marked an important date for the International Youth Center Foundation, which was the Opening Ceremony of the International Youth Center Foundation in 1988, which is now better known as IYC, the International Youth Center.

After 33 years, IYC, which was established in collaboration with the Malaysian government and the Government of Japan, still stands strong as a Partner Agency to the Ministry of Youth and Sports Malaysia (KBS). Some of KBS's major programs have also received the touch and role of IYC, especially those related to internationalization and advanced leadership programs. Among them are The Ship for Southeast Asian and Japanese Youth Exchange Program (SSEAYP), Malaysian Youth International Volunteerism program (MyCORPS), Malaysian Youth Parliament, Premier Fellow, and Corporate Fellow, and Malaysia Future Leader’s School (MFLS). In fact, before that, I was involved in the early stages of contribution to the establishment of the Malaysian Youth Development and Research Institute (IPPBM) which was later renamed IYRES.

Recognizing the role of IYC in preparing Malaysian youth as Global Citizens, IYC has adapted the concept of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) into each program and direction of IYC. Since the SDGs were launched by the United Nations (UN) in 2015, IYC became the sole partner agency of KBS to materialize our commitment to the SDG's implementation. Advocacy movements and awareness initiatives of SDGs are included in each module as well as the content of IYC programs including the main KBS programs which involve IYC. To ensure that Malaysian youth who follows IYC and KBS programs have a deep understanding of the SDGs, IYC has initiated several main initiatives such as the Urban Agricultural Food Security Project (IYC UrbanFarming), Orang Asli (Indigenous) Youth Development, Young Women Development, IYC4Peace initiative, and Youth Development in the rural area of Sabah and Sarawak.

IYC constantly strives to promote the achievements and reporting of initiatives on the SDGs internationally. This is very important to ensure that the image and role of IYC and KBS on youth development at the global level are recognized and included. Thus, IYC has intensified network-building efforts as well as cooperation with external agencies. Since early 2016, IYC has actively sending youth delegates to United Nations-related programs. In 2020, IYC has been mandated by UNHabitat to be one of the agencies to partner in organizing sessions themed "Governance" at Youth Forum in conjunction with the 10th World Urban Forum (WUF10) held in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates (UAE). Recently on 6th April 2021, IYC organized a side event session: Youth and The Future of Governance, in conjunction with the ECOSOC Youth Forum 2021 (partnered with UNDP, UNDESA, Asian Youth Council, Friends for Leadership, Major Group for Children and Youth, and Asian Youth Network), as one of IYC4Peace initiative which was attended by various youths across regions, via the new norm method: webinar online platform.

The results of IYC's hard work in advocating and promoting the SDGs are now even clearer as KBS has incorporated elements of the SDGs as an important component in the implementation of the KBS Strategic Planning Plan for the coming 2022. Indeed, it is the most appropriate moment as the last 10 years to 2030 is the most critical moment for community development efforts around the world described by the UN as the Decade of Action.

For 2022, IYC has focused on 3 main SDG thrusts as the focus, namely the SDG11: Cities And Communities, SDG16: Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions, and SDG 17: Partnerships For The Goals. This commitment reflects IYC's partnership to play a stronger role in the global community development; to produce more Malaysian young talents as Global Citizens.

Hopefully, IYC will continue to excel as a youth development hub; which acts as a meeting point between excellence and past success, with the hope to build a better and prosperous future.

Salam hormat,
